As a follow - up communication; The student who made the threat on the bus route has been identified and is being dealt with through the disciplinary process. The threat assessment team, in conjunction with law enforcement, reviewed the facts and determined that the threat was not credible. Again, we cannot go into more detail of this incident because of student privacy laws. The district takes these matters seriously and always places the well-being of our students, faculty and staff ahead of all other things. I would like to thank the Du Quoin Police Department, administration, the threat assessment team and everyone who had a part in quickly resolving this situation.

Today, we were made aware of a possible threat to a specific student on a bus route. The student who made the statement will not be on the bus or in attendance at school while this investigation is conducted and we will continue to closely monitor the situation. The police were immediately contacted to investigate the incident. We cannot go into more detail of this incident because of student privacy laws and because the investigation is ongoing. We take all threats seriously as the safety of our students and staff is our top priority. Again, after consultation with local authorities, we feel comfortable that the school is safe at this time.

We want to encourage you to talk to your child about the importance of alerting law enforcement or district administration about any threats of violence or safety concerns at school. One easy way to report safety concerns is through the state’s new confidential reporting platform, Safe2Help Illinois, which is staffed 24/7 by trained help line professionals. When someone reports an urgent threat through this platform, phone calls are immediately made to a District level team who then notify specific school officials and develop a plan of action. Your continued support is invaluable in maintaining a secure learning environment.

At Du Quoin CUSD #300, we will always be vigilant and make matters concerning student safety our top priority. I want to address misconceptions about a recent situation concerning a reported threat of violence directed towards Du Quoin Middle School on Thursday, December 7, 2023. As soon as district administration became aware of the threat, we contacted law enforcement and activated our Threat Assessment Team. Law enforcement and school officials made contact with the student and determined the threat was vague and never credible. Nevertheless, we have continued to closely monitor this situation out of an abundance of caution. We understand that situations like these can be unsettling, but I assure you our district will always prioritize a safe and secure learning environment.

21st Century families, Due to a road closure on US 51, the afterschool bus route (David's bus) will have to use alternate routes during dismissal today. Expected delays could cause the route to be as late as 8pm. If able, we encourage you to pick up your student today. Call the office at 618.542.2646 if you are unsure about your child's bus.
