Du Quoin Middle School
2021 COVID Winter Athletic Guidelines
Sports are returning to DMS - Go Warriors! But, things will look quite different for the remainder of the school year.
The Illinois Department of Public Health(IDPH), Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity(DCEO), the Illinois State Board of Education(ISBE) and the office of the Governor of Illinois have created a set of guidelines to follow to provide students the opportunity to participate in sports for this school year. The new guidelines were issued on January 22, 2021 and supersedes any other information previously released.
The guidelines listed below are for students, coaches and spectators to adhere to for the current school year. Again, the guidelines listed are set in place by IDPH, DCEO, ISBE and the Office of the Governor, not the school nor school district.
If any changes are made to the guidelines from IDPH, DCEO, ISBE and the Office of the Governor, we will make the changes as soon as possible.
Du Quoin Middle school is in Region 4 of the Illinois COVID region map. Region 4 is at this writing, in Phase 4 of the IDPH mitigation plan. This allows for higher risk sports (basketball) to be played at level 3 and medium risk sports(volleyball) to play at level 4.
Additional restrictions have been added to our recommendations of play by the SIJHSAA. As of NOW(1/29/2021) Tournaments are not allowed at any level of play. A recommendation of three games per week maximum is in place.
As per DCEO, IDPH, ISBE and the Office of the Governor - we are not allowed to compete outside our COVID region, unless it is against a conference opponent.
Requirements for Athletes
- Athletes will have temperature and wellness checks at each practice and game. If a student is displaying any signs of illness, please do not send them to the practice or game. If a student athlete has a temperature above 100.4 or 1 covid symptom, that student will have to leave the facility. If a student is not able to attend practice or a game contact the coach or the school to inform them of the reason for absence.
- Athletes are to bring their own water/water container to practice and games. Water coolers will NOT be provided at home or away games. We do have bottle fillers on water fountains in the DMS building.
- Athletes must arrive ready to practice or play. Locker room facilities will not be used for practices or before games, halftime and after games at DMS or any road games.
- Athletes should place belongings(gym bag, backpacks, etc.) six feet from others personal belongings.
- Athletes must not share equipment such as towels, water bottles, shoes, etc.
- Athletes and coaches should refrain from handshakes, high fives, fist bumps, etc.
- All must refrain from spitting or blowing their nose without a tissue.
- Athletes and coaches MUST wear a face covering that covers their nose and mouth. It is recommended that each athlete bring several extra coverings to change once they become wet.
- Athletes will be given extra breaks in practice and games to allow for rest and mask changes.
- Social distancing requirements will be maintained when athletes are not actively participating in practice or games.
- Frequent hand washing and/or sanitizing is encouraged.
- Travel on buses to games will follow Durham Bus Co. guidelines. Social distancing and face coverings will be required on the bus.
- Food will not be allowed at practices, games or on busses.
- Athletes are not to remain at the school between the end of school and the start of practice or games.
- Athletes are NOT to arrive early for practice/games. Athletes are expected to arrive at the designated time given by coaches. Athletes will NOT be admitted to the building early.
- When athletes are not in participation (i.e. 7th grade team during 8th grade game). Team members will be required to sit in designated areas behind the team bench or other designated location to allow for greater social distancing.
Spectator Guidance
As of today, January 29 DMS will NOT be able to host any spectators for DMS 2021 winter athletic events. The DMS gym can not meet the DCEO, IDPH, ISBE and Office of the Governor requirements for spectators.
From DCEO return to play guidelines
Our venue is NOT large enough to accommodate the expectations set. The 30 foot distance is measured from the sidelines and end lines of each playing surface. The DMS gym measurements of 19ft and 26 ft from basketball and volleyball sidelines to the top row of the bleachers excludes us from being able to host spectators.
Spectators will not be allowed to be in the building(commons, halls, etc.) during practice and events as well.
Spectators are also NOT to be in attendance at away contests as well. This is a JSWEC Conference agreement.
This is not what we had hoped to have for the return of sports - but, we are playing sports and we want to make sure we are doing what is necessary to keep our student/athletes playing sports.
ALL DMS home events and most away will be available via live stream at no charge.
Home games can be found on the DMS youtube page
https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCD9lhaAlbFN6CJodOId8MFw
Away game links will be available on the DMS Athletics Facebook page or on the Jr. Southwest Egyptian Conference Facebook page.

JSWEC - https://www.facebook.com/JSWEC-Jr-Southwest-Egyptian-Conference-105631694878189
Jesse Ruiz, Deputy Governor of Education of the State of Illinois has warned the SIJHSAA, IHSA, and IESA about making these athletic events happen with limited to no attendance. Please follow the guidelines so future sports may occur in cooperation with the IDPH. *** from the SIJHSAA
These guidelines could change. If any changes in guidelines are made, we will make changes as quickly as possible.
