May 21, 2009

The Driver Education Department strives to teach the laws, rules of the road, traffic signals&signs, pavement markings, and the effects of alcohol on driving capabilities and the consequences.

In addition to the classroom section there is behind the wheel training for those who pass the classroom and learner's permit test.  The 6 hours of behind the wheel training should also be supplemented  with the required 50 hours of driving time at home.

Facts for Parents:

l.  Cost of the class is $50.00.  This must be paid before the student can be signed up for the class.  The money is used for general maintenance of the car, gas, insurance, etc.  Please pay this in the main office of the high school.

Learners Permit is an additional $20.00 fee charged by the State of Illinois for the white slip.  Cash or check written to the Secretary of State's office at the time the white slip application is filled out is mandatory or it will not be issued.

2.  Learner's permits(white slips) are valid for 2 years from the issue date.

3.  White slips must be held for a minimum of 9 months.

4.   If you get 1 ticket while you have your white slip your 9 months probationary period starts over again.

5.   First year a student has their driver's license they may only have 1 person in the vehicle with them.(unless it is immediate family)

6.   Students do not have to get their driver's license at 16 yrs. Parents have the right to make them wait even after they have passed the classroom and driving requirements.

7.    Parents also have the right AFTER a student get's their driver's license to have it pulled/made invalid if they feel this needs to be done.(student under 18 yrs. of age)  Contact the Secretary of State's office for these forms.

8.    If your under 21 yrs. and get 2 tickets (moving violations) in 2yrs. time you will lose your driver's license for 1 year.

Driver's License is INVALID after curfew hours unless you can prove your driving home after work or from an athletic event.

10.  Cell phones(19 yrs and under)-you may not use while driving.  You can be ticketed for this and it is considered a moving violation.

Promoting Safety at DHS

We have for several years now promoted seatbelt usage surveys with the help of the Student Council.  Students who are seen wearing their seatbelts have their names written down.  Those names are put into a drawing.  Each week 2 names are drawn out for preferential parking spots in front of the high school and they are given free food coupons too.

At the end of the year we draw 1 name out of the seatbelt survey box and that person receives a TV .  The money for the TV is provided by our local insurance agencies as well as from grant money.
