A True Underdog Story

Dodge ball has a checkered past. For some it has been a good way to enjoy a true American sport. For others it has been a dreaded P.E. teacher lesson plan filler on a slow Friday. Here at DHS it has become a yearly festival of fun and excitement during the lunch hour.
Originally conceived by Guidance Counselor Erin Basso and former DHS social studies teacher Craig Garner, the DHS Dodge ball Tournament has become a yearly winter lunchtime staple for the students. Now in its fourth year, the tournament is directed by the Du Quoin High School Student Council and their sponsor, Ms. Marcy Davis.
This year there are 16 teams of 5 entered. Play began last week and the championship and consolation brackets have taken shape. Teams on the championship side of the bracket include the Demons, Gorlocks, Shockers, Blue Crew, Canadians, Thunders, Cultural Diffusion, and TrixR4Kidz (?). Playing in the consolation bracket will be USC, Dolphins, Maple Leaves, Cornhuskers, Giants, Jackalopes, Timberwolves, and Detroit Lions.
Once again, the tournament has been an action packed event filled with excitement for the young and old. It has been a grand spectacle, enticing large crowds of student and faculty spectators, eager for the siren call of "Dodge ball!". To all teams entered, good luck and don't forget the immortal words of Patches O'Houlihan "Remember the five Ds of dodge ball: dodge, duck, dip, dive, and dodge."
